The most common causes of COPD exacerbations are respiratory infections like a cold, flu or pneumonia. While the cause of flare-ups can vary from person to person, other triggers may include:

What are the symptoms of a COPD flare-up?

People with COPD can experience flare-ups differently, but there are a number of possible warning signs and symptoms you can look out for.

Early warning signs include:

  • Increases in cough
  • Increase or changes in mucus
  • More shortness of breath with the same or less activity

Common COPD symptoms include:

  • Increased shortness of breath/breathlessness
  • Frequent coughing (with and without mucus)
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Unusual tiredness
